A name after an Indian monk and a famous statesman, 19th   Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, the Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport is the only commercial airbase at Leh. This airport is for public use and is one of the most commercially used airports in the world. The airport is at a very high peak and is at an altitude of three thousand two hundred and fifty six meters (or 1080 ft.) from the main sea level. Till February, 2016, the airport was under the strict surveillance of Indian airforce.

The airport at Leh has now been handed over from the Indian Airforce to Airport Authority of India. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) needs to and will expand the airport for commercial use as the tourists to Leh is overflowing every year. The airport has airlines that provide a route back and forth from Jammu and Kashmir to Leh and from Delhi to Leh.

The way you travel to Leh

The Leh Airport always remains under the fine and strong security of the Indian airforce as the place isn’t very safe with the probable terrorist attacks. The flight duration from the New Delhi Airport to Leh Airport is of one hour and thirty minutes approximately with the air fare of about rupees seven thousand for each person. Flights only take off during the morning as the weather deteriorates in the afternoon with the mountain winds that creates a pressure towards the eastern side of the port which is harmful for any flight to be taking off during that time.
